Messi 'upset' over ban for skipping MLS All-Star game
Lionel Messi is reportedly "very upset, extremely upset" after being handed a one-match ban by Major League Soccer (MLS) for skipping the recent MLS All-Star Game. His Inter Miami teammate, Jordi Alba, also received the same suspension.
According to MLS rules, any player who is selected for the All-Star Game and does not participate without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match. Both Messi and Alba were selected but did not feature in the game against a Liga MX All-Stars team on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas defended the players, stating that the decision for them to sit out was made by the club due to a grueling schedule. Mas pointed out that Messi and Alba had played "nine games in 35 days" and emphasized that the players prioritize competitive matches over an exhibition game. He described the MLS rule and subsequent punishment as "draconian" and expressed concern that it could negatively impact Messi's long-term perception of the league, especially with his current contract expiring at the end of 2025.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber acknowledged Messi's significant contributions to the league and expressed understanding for his decision to prioritize fitness. However, he stated that the league had to enforce its long-standing policy, calling it a "very difficult decision." Garber also indicated that the league would review its policy regarding All-Star Game participation for future events.
Despite training with Inter Miami on Friday, July 25, 2025, in anticipation of playing, both Messi and Alba were officially suspended and missed Inter Miami's match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday, July 26, 2025. This situation highlights the tension between player welfare, club priorities, and league regulations in MLS.
