Arsenal sign Gyokeres from Sporting for £63m
Arsenal have officially confirmed the signing of Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres for a fee reported to be £63 million (€73m). The deal includes a guaranteed fee of £55 million (€63m) plus an additional £8.5 million (€10m) in add-ons, and the Swedish international has signed a five-year contract with the Gunners.
This acquisition marks a significant move for Arsenal, who have made securing a prolific striker their primary focus in this transfer window. Gyokeres has been in sensational form during his two seasons at Sporting, scoring an incredible 97 goals in just 102 matches across all competitions. Last season alone, he netted 54 goals in 52 games, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League, as he helped Sporting clinch both the league title and the Portuguese Cup.
The move sees Gyokeres return to English football, having previously played for Brighton & Hove Albion and Coventry City. His agent reportedly waived a significant commission to help facilitate the deal, which had seen prolonged negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting. Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, had initially been firm on his valuation, and there were reports of Gyokeres even facing disciplinary action for refusing to train to push for the move.
Gyokeres is expected to take the iconic No. 14 shirt, previously worn by Thierry Henry, for Arsenal. He becomes Arsenal's sixth major signing of the summer, joining the likes of midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad (£51m), Christian Norgaard from Brentford (£15m), Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea (£5m), Noni Madueke from Chelsea (£52m), and defender Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia (£13m).
This busy summer of transfers indicates Arsenal's strong intent to build a squad capable of challenging for top honors in the Premier League and beyond.
