Isak situation has to be right for Newcastle - Howe

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that while there are "things going on behind the scenes" regarding Alexander Isak's future, any decision made "has to be right for Newcastle." This statement comes amidst widespread speculation that the Swedish striker wants to explore a move away from St. James' Park this summer.

Isak did not travel with the Newcastle squad for their pre-season tour of Asia, with the club citing a minor thigh injury as the reason. However, reports have emerged suggesting that Isak has informed Newcastle of his desire to consider his options. Liverpool, despite recently signing Hugo Ekitike, are still strongly linked with the 25-year-old, with some reports claiming they are the only club in "concrete talks" with his representatives. Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal also reportedly made a lucrative offer, which Isak is said to have rejected as he prefers to remain in Europe.

Howe, speaking ahead of Newcastle's friendly against Arsenal in Singapore, acknowledged the constant media attention surrounding Isak, stating it's "not easy for anyone in that situation." He emphasized the good relationship he shares with Isak and the player's popularity within the dressing room, expressing a desire for him to continue his journey at Newcastle.

Crucially, Howe confirmed that there are no contract talks currently taking place with Isak, with that potentially being "for a later date." He stressed that Newcastle are in a "very strong position financially" and are "determined to be successful," implying that they will not be forced into selling Isak for a reduced fee.

While Newcastle had reportedly placed a £150 million valuation on Isak, a figure Liverpool had previously seen rejected, the situation remains fluid. Howe's comments indicate a willingness to stand firm on their valuation, and he did not put a specific timescale on when the situation needs to be resolved. He also noted that while he would love Isak to stay, "it's football, and who knows what the future may bring."

The ongoing saga highlights the complexities of the transfer window, with player desires, club valuations, and financial fair play regulations all playing a part. Newcastle are reportedly looking at alternative strikers like Benjamin Sesko and Yoane Wissa, which could be a preemptive move should Isak depart. However, as Howe reiterates, any outcome must ultimately serve the best interests of Newcastle United.
